Rhubarb is a really easy plant to grow in a cold climate, and
generally if you leave them in the ground after harvesting, they would
grow back and keep growing for about ten or twelve years. It is quite
easy to grow them, provided you follow a few general steps which would
teach you how to grow rhubarb. You can even grow them in places where
water is scarce because this plant does not need much caring, and all
you need is a bit of water and fertilizer and a chance for them to
grow on their own. So, if you would like to know how to grow rhubarb,
then you should follow this post carefully. Remember, Rhubarb root and
leaves contain oxalic acid, which is toxic, so eating them might cause
you serious harm.
First of all, you need a place for the rhubarbs to grow. Choose
soil which is slightly acidic. Check the ph value of the soil. If it
is equal to or under ph 5, you are good to go. Dig in the soil and
carefully add some well-rotten manure, which you can easily prepare at
home. Check for weeds and remove them because rhubarbs do not like
getting disturbed. Once you have dug up the soil, leave it for a
night, and return the next day with the rhubarb crowns which you would
have to sow in. Remember, you would have to plant these by the end of
spring, and the temperature should be kept at a low for them to grow,
about 40 degree Fahrenheit at most.
Once you get your crowns, check them if they are about 10 cm below
the surface of your soil. Your crown bud should ideally be around 8 cm
over the soil surface. If there are any shoots just waiting to unfurl,
they should be kept over the ground. Space the crowns around 60 to 80
cm from each other, and keep them in a shady place where the sun does
not shine much. This would be an ideal climate for the stalks to
grow. Rhubarbs need a bit of water and fertilizer every once in a
while, but they prefer being left in a cool, slightly dry climate.
Thin out your rhubarb stalks once every three to four years, to
prevent them from being too overcrowded. That would essentially help
you keep your rhubarbs strong and fresh.
Remember, frost is the enemy of rhubarb, and severe frost attacks
can actually make the oxalic acid in the rhubarb leaves enter the
stalks. So be very careful with the plants if they have been exposed
to frost, and remove them to your compost heap. There they would be
able to break down the toxicity of the oxalic acid and can no longer
harm you.
